“Being debt free raises questions about one’s character”
I recently heard a woman make this comment and decided this was worth quoting and blogging about. As her comment was made in relation to not giving credit (for a larger purchase, like a home or luxury car) to those who don’t have debt.
I do believe that there was a time when people who were debt free and had extra money left over at the end of the month were considered to be doing something “shady” to be in that position. Yet, those times have long passed and today there are people who simply manage their money well enough to be debt free and living comfortably, even on a regular 9-to-5 income.
I found this comment to be coming from someone who is ignorant about spending habits other than their own.
This particular woman is a coffee drinker and considering the average cup of gourmet coffee runs $4, if she picks up a cup on her way to work everyday, she’ll spend close to $1000 on coffee alone each year. Add to that the expense of eating out each day – another $1200 – $1500 a year, plus the manicures, the pedicures, the salon treated $250 hair styles every 6 weeks and it adds up quickly. For someone who is not earning more than the average salary, these extra expenses can easily put them into debt.
Now consider those who manage their money wisely, eat out infrequently opting for picking up groceries at a fraction of the cost and creating restaurant style meals with friends at home, while replacing the $4 per cup coffee with the $4 per bag of coffee and making themselves a cup as they head out the door in the morning. Nothing wrong with manicures and pedicures, but they can also be turned into a “girls party” event instead of paying $15 a shot, they become free with the added perk of friends to socialize with. Of course we all love to have our hair done, so perhaps this could be the splurge item?
My opinion is that being debt free should not raise questions about one’s character, but should shout to the world “this person is responsible and reliable” afterall, being debt free is a challenge in and of itself.
So what do you think? If someone you knew was debt free, would it raise your eyebrows? Would you be concerned about their character? Post a comment and share your thoughts!
Be healthy, be focused and be the best you that you can possibly be!
