Explaning life?

February 2nd, 2009

I have to wonder, why it is that most individuals are conditioned to explain themselves and their actions daily?  I have been thinking about this as I am currently in charge of receiving rsvp’s for an event we are hosting.  I do understand that some people will attend and others will not, all I require is “yes” or “no” in terms of if the person is attending.  Yet, I find myself receiving emails and voicemails with long explanations about why someone is or is not attending…why is this?  Does it really matter to me if someone is not attending because their carpet is being cleaned and they can’t walk on it to get to the door?  Or because little Suzie is traumatized by being with a sitter, so mommy and daddy can’t leave her alone?

I’m wondering who the detailed explanation is really for…

I have begun to appreciate & understand that we are conditioned to explain ourselves and our actions.

People will always talk about what they are ‘going to’ do, what they ‘have to’ do, and then what they actually do may or may not be the same thing they spoke about.  Actions speak louder than words and I’ve begun to find it kind of fun to be brief and to the point in situations that require an answer about something.    Lately, I’ve been working on more of a ‘need to know’ basis, answering people with what is required information and leaving out the excess information…and surprisingly people seem to get offended by this lack of information.  Now for me, being offended is a personal decision…I choose not to be offended by others, I may move on and distance myself from them, but being offended and living in the drama of the situation is not what I opt to do.

So I ask you…who are you explaning yourself to and why?  Is it really important to tell someone all about your reasons for or against an action?  If so, why?  I look forward to comments on this post as I’d really like to read some feedback….

In gratitude,
Caryn
