The words girls and glamour don’t belong in the same title

April 7th, 2010

My 9 year old daughter found this book next to her favorite Junie B. Jones books in the children’s section of the bookstore.

The product description from Amazon.com reads as “Be confident, be gorgeous, be glamorous. The tips and tricks in this book will help girls reveal the goddess inside. The entries include: how to host a spa-style party; how to work out your face shape; how to design your signature perfume; how to stop biting your nails; how to pretend you’ve got freckles; how to jazz up a boring ponytail; how to get out of a limo; how to give yourself a mini facial; how to emphasise your eye colour; how to make your bedroom skin-friendly; how to get super-soft hands and feet while you sleep; and, how to make a ribbon belt.”

Hmmmm… perhaps if the title were different….

But quite frankly with a title like this, this is not a book I’d invest money in or encourage my daughter to read. Perhaps when she is older it would be more appropriate. I know that when she gets married she’ll want a glamorous ring from somewhere like  Seventy-Seven Diamonds and that is totally acceptable. But that is in the future, right now my daughter doesn’t need glamour in her life.

When a book has the words “Girls” and “Glamour” in the same title, I feel it just feeds into the esteem issues so many woman (of all ages) are already dealing with….
