God is a Woman

December 9th, 2009

ian-cobernIan Coburn, stand-up comedian turned author, living a life that many dream of and all because he knows and wrote the best selling book, “God is a Woman” and has been sharing his mis-adventures through  laughter for over a decade!  He’ll make you laugh, he’ll make you smile and all because he’s making good choices and telling the truth!  Welcome Ian…

Tell us about the path you traveled to arrive where you are today: At 19, I noticed a very strange pattern for making choices about your life. People chose to do what their friends chose, want their parents wanted, what paid well, and so forth. Mostly, they answered on simple question: What are you good at? Then did that. And the older people I knew who had done the same were miserable. I learned that we ask the wrong questions. Instead of asking what I was good at, I asked myself what I needed and what was important to me. Walla, I became a standup comedian.

What kept you moving forward on the days things were not going exactly the way you were hoping they would? Searching for the angle. There is always an angle; you just have to find it. Like when I needed to stand out from other comics to get work, I attached key chains with my biz cards in them to club condo keys. Club owners never forgot me and I got a steady stream of work.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who has decided they would like to live in a world of their own creation? You don’t have to be a starving artist.

What special things do you do for yourself daily to maintain your momentum and energy levels? Play sports.

If you could spend 3 days on a deserted island with two people of your choosing, who would they be and why? George Washington. (Read his farewell address and you’ll know why; would be fascinating, insightful conversations. The gorgeous but tasteful bartender I met over the weekend. Do I really have to tell you why?

What is your favorite audio material and what do you enjoy most about this material? I listen to music when I write, from a variety of genres. Keeps me flowing and I can lose myself in the song when I get lost, which helps me find the right words more quickly and without forced focus.

logoWhat is your favorite reading material and what gives it that special place in your heart? I don’t read much.

Who has inspired you and what is it about them that you found inspirational? Anthony Griffith. He was the only comedian I saw on TV at fifteen before becoming a comedian. I saw him and knew I wanted to try it. Tucker Max. Whether you like his material or not is not the point; the point his he stuck with it, found his niche, and made it work. That takes real effort. Most would have given up and many have. He also provides good insight into how to use the Internet and shares all his knowledge on how to make a film and his experiences in such. (I’ve never read his book or much of his stories; like I said, I don’t read much and he’s really not my style.) Tim Ferriss. His book, I read. He shows the stale business world there is a much better way, something many more people need to heed if society is going to continue to be successful. Gene McGuire. It’s always good to hear from one of the all-time comedy veterans and road warriors that you are one of the top talents. Watching him taught me how to work very casually with the crowd and adjust the show, as needed, to always have success.

What do you see in your future? Presentations on how to make good choices. A book on the same, noting that choice is the meaning of life, not love. A children’s book and series.

Where is your favorite place in the world to spend time, what is special to you about this location? Camping in Canada or Yellowstone. Lots of animals to see and it’s always good to get back to basics.

Who has been your greatest support system and how have they shown you their support? Friends. They always give me a place to vent and joke, which gives me the strength to go on.

What / who are you most thankful for and why? The choices I’ve made.

What is your favorite way to contribute or give back? Help others achieve their goals and dreams.

Please share the top three things you feel people would benefit from doing if they truly desire to create the life of their dreams?

Don’t make excuses. Don’t make lists. Just answer these four questions as simply as possible: 1) What do you need? 2) What’s important to you? 3) What are your responsibilities? 4) What are your limitations? Revisit this list at least every couple years. What people find when they make this list is that what’s important to them is often absent from their life or that they’re treating what was important to them ten years ago as if it was important today. This often solves the perplexing riddle of what’s been eating at them that just can’t quite put their finger on.

What products and services do you offer to assist others on their journey? A free flash presentation on how to make good choices in all aspects of life, relationships, and business. An entertaining book of dating advice, using my own life experiences of disaster as amusing lessons.

  1. “I don’t read much.” Perhaps not the written word, but I have a funny feeling you read life through the actions of others. Great story! Awesome career field! Humor is the best medicine! Dr. Ian – I like how that sounds. Congratulations of your continued success!!!
