Going natural

December 18th, 2009

Welcome Dottie Simmons of Simmons Naturals, thank you for sharing your story with us today.

Tell us about the path you traveled to arrive where you are today:We were part of the late 1960’s back to the land movement. My personal path led from Pennsylvania to California when I was 11, I then moved from the S.F. Bay Area to the far northern California mountains in 1968. I discovered gardens and goats and very basic back country life. I met my husband of 37 years here in 1971. Our adventure together with my daughter led us to experiencing a true back country gold claim, animal husbandry, various rentals and ultimately to find our property here in the remote rural area of the coastal mountains of far Northern California. In 1982 we started a business together and created our life and home from the bottom up.  We have had 2 other children, a son and a daughter. All are now in their 30’s, and we have 5 (!) grandchildren.

What kept you moving forward on the days things were not going exactly the way you were hoping they would? We had a vision. From when we were first drawn here, our goal was to live as self-sufficient, sustainable life as possible. As close to the earth as possible. Learning the skills to survive with or without money.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who has decided they would like to live in a world of their own creation?Perseverance really does further! Follow your heart.

What special things do you do for yourself daily to maintain your momentum and energy levels?I breathe. I walk the puppy. I do Tai Chi. Gardening. I look at the night sky. I look around me and am profoundly grateful. “This is the day the Lord has made. Rejoice and be glad in it.”

Who has inspired you and what is it about them that you found inspirational?Buddha for realizing connectiveness, and very young children for their unconditional joy in life.

Where is your favorite place in the world to spend time, what is special to you about this location? Here at home. It is the home of my heart and beautiful every moment in a different way. The mountain, the river, the garden, the Earth.

Who has been your greatest support system and how have they shown you their support? My beloved husband, family & friends, for accepting me as I am – with all my idiosyncrasies.

What is your favorite way to contribute or give back?Teaching by example, sharing, making people laugh, and volunteering. Keeping children off-guard and full of wonder. Sharing food. We also donate to several organizations local and international.

Please share the top three things you feel people would benefit from doing if they truly desire to create the life of their dreams?

Do what you feel is right even if it differs from the norm.

Persevere through the tough times. They are temporary.

Follow your heart.

Anything I missed that you would like to share? Whatever you do, you must do it in your own way. We are individuals and have different, individual journeys. Money is far from the most important thing.  Try to do something new to you every year of your life.
