Grateful I can see

September 10th, 2009

Today is an amazing day for me.  As I glance out my office window I see hummingbirds floating from tree to tree, my cat, Zoey is watching with the intense “if I could only get through the glass, I’d eat you up” look in her eyes as she runs back and forth on the window ledge.  The sun shines across the room and I feel its warmth on my skin as I type this post.

My reason for being so immensely grateful (more so than my usual level of gratitude) today?  It’s simple.  Earlier today I was involved in what I will only call a “freak accident” and within a moment I went from enjoying a workout to laying on the floor with my hands over my face as I had been hit directly in both eyes with a piece of equipment that had come loose from its mount.  For several moments I could not open my eyes, and all I could think about was “what if I can’t see?”  The pain was intense and fortunately I was not alone when this happened as it took almost 5 minutes before I was able to open my eyes and even then I did so with prayers on my lips and the positive affirmation of “my body is strong and my eyes are healthy” running through my mind.

The pain subsided, the swelling is not as bad as it could be (although I have to give thanks to a friend who shared that vodka ~ externally, not internally ~ for some reason prevents swelling) so between that and ice packs I gradually made it through my morning and have managed to get back on track with just a hit of two black & blue eyes.

As I ventured out to do some errands I notice I am more aware of my surroundings and the beauty of nature.  I cannot imagine how drastically my life would have changed if this accident had been anything more severe.  I am grateful that it was what it was and nothing more.  I am grateful that I can see, my eyes remain healthy and I continue to be blessed.

I normally live my life being thankful for what I have received, but today was a wake-up call and I realize how quickly it can all be taken away too.  So my level of gratitude has just increased many time over and for the chance to grow from this experience, I am eternally grateful.

In gratitude,
Caryn
