He turned devastation into a beautiful life
October 30th, 2009
By focusing on the positive, Brian J. Donley has created a life of his dreams after surviving a tragedy that shook him to the very core of his being. Today he is sharing the blessings he has received with so many others, assisting them in moving forward into the beautiful lives they desire and deserve. Thank you Brian for taking the time to share your story with us.
Brian, please tell us about the path you traveled to arrive where you are today:
I injected a positive attitude early in my life with a simple saying, “Smile, it makes people wonder what you are up to!” I heard that and thought it was funny. I tried it out on my mom and dad, only to find that it made them smile back, and I felt really good on the inside. The more I tried it on different people, the better I felt.
The path I am currently on is like climbing a mountain. I go so far this way and have to make adjustments and go another way to continue the climb. Sometimes, you have to take some steps backwards to go forward. It is all about adjustments. If you are not happy in your current circumstances, make a tiny adjustment and see what happens.
I have my story called “CYA – Circumstances You Adjust” coming out soon in “Manifest Success – volume II.” As Co-Author, I talk in detail about the various paths that have led me to where I currently am in life.
What kept you moving forward on the days things were not going exactly the way you were hoping they would?
I believe there is an internal indicator inside your body that you can feel that says “there is a better experience out there for you than what you are currently feeling.” You just need to open your mind and let the ideas come. Once you receive some new idea and you discern if it is going to move you forward, all you have to do is take action and the rest will follow.
A funeral of a loved one really puts this to a test! When my first wife of 12 wonderful years died from a complication of an epileptic seizure at the young age of 36, I was devastated. For several weeks I went to bed crying and woke up crying. During the day, I worked and concentrated on my job. Then one day, my late wife’s parents invited me to dinner and as I walked into the restaurant, someone said “Hi Brian!” with a big smile (my soon to be new wife). That’s all it took to snap me out of my depression. My mind was open and ready for adjustments.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who has decided they would like to live in a world of their own creation?
This is a great question! I believe the key words are “own creation.” My son, Dakota, at six years old, made a statement worth repeating. I have rewritten this quote several times and have used it in several publications – “The window to the world is open, so open up your mind’s eye and see.”
Open your mind to new ideas and when you visually see the future results of that Idea and it moves you and this world forward – follow it by taking action. The first step in any idea is to get it down on paper. “DONLEY’S LAW” walks you through the steps necessary to take an idea and make it a reality. I give DONLEY’S LAW away free of charge to anyone who wants to send me an email.
What special things do you do for yourself daily to maintain your momentum and energy levels?
I am a big believer in self-help books, videos, CD’s, MP3s, tele-classes, webinars, conferences, seminars, etc. Anything that moves this world forward. I read so many self-help books, I now offer reviews to writers and have developed Donley’s Five Star W.O.W. (Words Of Wisdom) Award.
I stay away from things like CNN (Continuous Negative News) and most TV in general. I moved my TV to the basement and usually only watch DVD’s. I do not read newspapers and try to keep up on positive events at various web sites.
If you could spend 3 days on a deserted island with two people of your choosing, who would they be and why?
There are a lot of great people out there, each worth every minute you would be able to spend with them. Myself, if I have a choice, I would use this time to be with my two boys, Joshua and Dakota. The future is in those whom we spend time with now!
I had a very wise man stop at my table one day in a restaurant as I struggled to keep peace between my boys and he said – “The greatest wealth a man will ever have is in his children.” There is no doubt in my mind that your children are priceless and any amount of time you can spend bonding with them is worth it.
What is your favorite audio material and what do you enjoy most about this material?
My favorite audio materials are CD’s that I can play in my car and listen while I am traveling. There are so many positive life teaching coaches, each brings with them something special and new for the listening heart.
What is your favorite reading material and what gives it that special place in your heart?
My favorite reading material is books and I focus primarily on Self Help. I really like true, fact based material, based on real life experiences. When I read about coaches, speakers, writers and others, I usually hear their life story of how they came into being. Many, of them touch my heart and resonate with my own life experiences!
Who has inspired you and what is it about them that you found inspirational?
So many people that I come in contact with have inspired me. I try to see the good in everyone and then try to adapt those good traits into myself. I try not to focus on bad traits as we have enough of those ourselves.
What do you see in your future?
I see myself being a continuous part of the Global Consciousness Change currently in progress. I see a brighter, greener, freer, loving, peace filled world. I see happiness, health and wealth dispersed to billions that once lived in poverty and our now self empowered moving this world forward at an accelerated rate for the goodness of all!
Where is your favorite place in the world to spend time, what is special to you about this location?
My favorite place to spend time is anywhere that my family resides. We have moved five times in four years and currently live in Northern Wisconsin. There is nothing like spending time with your loved ones.
In my professional life I have traveled all around the Country. The Grass is not greener on the other side of the fence. There is no place like home, and home is where my family resides at the time.
Who has been your greatest support system and how have they shown you their support?
My greatest support system is my family and friends. They allow me to write, talk, work uninterrupted to accomplish what needs accomplished. They are there if I need answers, communication, or just an I Love You, Dad.
What / who are you most thankful for and why?
I am most thankful for all the men and women who serve and have served in the armed forces. Especially those who have given their life in the protection of this countries people so that we are able to live the lives of our dreams. For it is because of these brave men and women that we are free to work together to free this world of dictatorships that have slowed evolution on a human scale.
What is your favorite way to contribute or give back?
I personally prefer to give wisdom that will be learned, applied and taught so that others may be empowered! I have rewritten “The Psychology of Success – Lecture” written in 1909 by Newton N. Riddell. I have titled it “The Original Psychology of Success” and have revised and expanded it for the 20th century. One of the first self help books of the 19th century, with methods (long forgotten) that apply more today than they did then.
Please share the top three things you feel people would benefit from doing if they truly desire to create the life of their dreams? Living The Life of Your Dreams:
1) Open your mind and listen to what comes in and LEARN
2) See (Vision)what it is your mind is telling you and APPLY
3) TEACH others and move forward expanding your consciousness
Three steps to empowerment – Learn, Apply and Teach!!!
Anything I missed that you would like to share?
Yes! I am a big believer in positive self help free information from reputable sources. On the internet there are coaches and teachers that offer free tele-classes, MP3’s, consultations, etc. Do not overlook these free sources for valuable life changing information.

Your story is oh so inspiring. I too lost my mom several years ago and I remember just lying on the couch in gloom and doom. I did not cry not even at the funeral, however, if I talked about her to a stranger, I would be teary eyed. To make a long story short – one day my mom whispered to me – I did not raise you to do this, if you want to honor me, get up, live life and take care of your children. AND I did, no questions asked. You are awesome, Brian!
Thanks
Hi Brian!
We have so much in common. Thank you for writing in such a compelling way and opening your experience so that we can share. It seems we are both a ‘conscious’ part of Global Consciousness Change. We are ‘all’ HERE together even when it appears we are unaware of that little (often overlooked) fact. I can see you understand that. Isn’t it delicious when the Divine within takes over the reigns. It’s kind of like the little cars at Disneyland at A Small World … it appears we have the steering wheel but the little boat/car is headed toward the Light! Delightful to be HERE with you NOW! By the way … I will be sending you a copy of my newest book, “Workplace Evolution: Common Sense for Uncommon Times” for review. I look forward to hearing your thoughts! If I can be of any assistance in any way please feel free to let me know!

Brian is truly remarkable and is walking his talk. I met Brian by chance and only for an istant and I have got more supporting emails from him, then any of my friends who are around me.
You truly make a difference and leaving ripple effects !!!
This is interesting. Brian is truly positive throughout.
I’m so used to seeing interviews that start positive but put in little negative blips here and there. I caught myself waiting for the other shoe to fall.
It didn’t.
Brian really does practice not only positive thinking, but even greater, lives positive intention…throughout. Well done! It’s my turn. I need to live through positive intention too. Thank you Brian.
