Consider a Holistic Lifestyle For Optimum Well-being
By Dr Tom Potisk AKA The “Down-to-Earth” Doctor
Feel like something’s missing in regard to your health and overall well-being? Perhaps you’re struggling with a particular illness or health problem that just never seems to go away, or maybe you’re just not confident tat you are doing everything possible to enable yourself a long productive ad active life.
Those thoughts are what led me to seek out, live, and now advocate to others a holistic lifestyle.
The best news is that doing so is not that difficult. First of all one must recognize the shortcomings of traditional medical care, like the higher risks, great expense, and potential for dependency versus the generally lower risks, lower expense, and higher personal responsibility of holistic care for general health.
The holistic principle is that real health is more than just the lack of symptoms. It supports that we are more than just physical parts, that we are also mental and spiritual beings. And that well-being involves care and attention to our whole being. Overall, this refreshing approach is very congruent with and respectful of God as our creator, recognizes that our bodies have a wonderful inborn healing ability, and that all health professions need to work together for the benefit of the patient.
For example; as a holistic practitioner for 25 years, I council my patients on the importance of good nutrition, exercise, and structural balance/alignment. These are great non-invasive, safe, and usually effective strategies for obtaining real health.
In regards to good nutrition, the holistic approach recognizes more than just the government’s food pyramid or recommended daily allowances.
Eating fresher produce, organically grown, eating slower and smaller but more frequent meals will all enhance the optimum functions of your body. The results of this type approach to eating usually are reported as more energy, less bloating, more balanced blood sugar/insulin response, and weight management.
The exercise aspect recognizes physical activity not as a dreaded chore, but as a daily fun necessity such as a brisk walk, bike ride, dancing, swimming, or even an aerobics class. Aim for minimally one-half hour everyday of this invigorating activity that assists your circulation, joint health, and muscle tone.
Structural balance/alignment may likely be the missing for most people struggling to find optimum function of their bodies. Unrecognized by most of the traditional medical establishment, this vital component of wellness involves stretching, chiropractic care, yoga, and proper postural awareness. Of utmost importance is having an aligned and balanced spinal structure, because disturbances here can pinch or irritate essential nervous system flow, causing a sort of short circuiting of one’s internal communications.
But there are many other aspects to consider, for example, I’m an advocate of decluttering. I’ve observed that most of us are overwhelmed by having too much ‘stuff’. This overabundance of things like clothes, tools, mementos, and even just junk does affect our well-being. Just try cleaning out a drawer or closet and you’ll notice an uptick in yourself, like more energy, happiness, and optimism. And that’s only a start!
So consider following a holistic approach to your wellbeing. I know you’ll never be better! And it’s never too late to start.
