Making her mark with motivational surfwear

November 30th, 2009

primo-headshotTanya Primo-Jones, creator and owner of Primo Activewear started her company out of “motherhood, unemployment, deaths in the family, and yes ….surfing” according to her website.  Their motivational messages integrated into active wear has put an interesting spin on the fashion world.  Today, Tanya shares some of her words of wisdom, welcome Tanya!

What kept you moving forward on the days things were not going exactly the way you were hoping they would? It is the drive in me to build something that will change a few attitudes, change a few lives, and will be left behind when I am gone one day. I am determined to make my business a success.  Some days, I need to close shop for an hour or the whole day to regroup; I also seek out motivational wisdom from friends, my husband, blogs or books on those days as well.  In my twenties my drive was to have children, now, pushing forty that drive is my business. I won’t feel like I really lived until it happens…not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing but its how I feel.

What piece of advice would you give to someone who has decided they would like to live in a world of their own creation?
Follow your heart. Expect to have bad days, expect for it to be hard, and expect to be discouraged. Know that you are not alone in having bad days and always celebrate every little victory.  Your success in life is not measured by the success of the business. Enjoy the journey.  Network and spend time with like-minded people.  You will grow by facing your fears and stepping out of your comfort zone.  Take the time to learn new things.   Do or read something each day that gives you renewed motivation. Know that you can only fail if you quit.

What special things do you do for yourself daily to maintain your momentum and energy levels?
Every day I talk to God.  Everyday I read my horoscope and pertain it to my business.  Everyday I read “something” that is motivational.  Every day I exercise and (try) to eat right.  Everyday I put work away for a little bit to be present with my husband and kids.

Who has inspired you and what is it about them that you found inspirational?

My old boss from a Skin Care Salon I worked at, Renee Rouleau.  Renee and I are the same age, but at 25 she was my boss at Elizabeth Renee Esthetics. She has always known what she wanted both personally and in her professional life and has taken the straight path directly to get it.  She let nothing or no one stop her. More impressively she always seemed to do it with a positive, upbeat, smiling attitude…even on a rainy Monday morning.

Who has been your greatest support system and how have they shown you their support?

I’ve always called my Dad my biggest cheerleader in life. He passed away 3 years ago and not having him in my life has taken a lot of getting use to. Today it is my husband, who loves me unconditionally, and supplies me constantly with what I need for success in my business.  When I’m down, he drags me up, when I’m excited, he’s excited with me, when I’m overwhelmed, he gets me organized, When I don’t know something, he gets me the answer, when I cry he hugs me and tells me I’ll be fine, when I’m spending too much money he reels me in.  He’s got my back all the time and wants me to be happy in life and successful in business and to see all my dreams come true.

What / who are you most thankful for and why? I am most thankful for the life I’ve been given.  For the health of me and my family and the love from my family and friends that has always surrounded me, but also for the challenges and obstacles I’ve faced throughout my life both as a kid and as an adult.  Sounds so cliché, but it truly is the most difficult things in life that eventually makes us a stronger or better person.

Thank you Tanya for sharing your words of wisdom.  I encourage everyone to take a few minutes and visit Tanya’s website at: http://www.PrimoActiveWear.com and do a little shopping while you’re there too!

In gratitude,
Caryn
