My first birthday without dad…

Dear Dad,
Tonight as I prepare to lay down and go to sleep thoughts of you are running through my mind…. Tomorrow, December 4th, will be the first birthday I will experience without you here as a physical presence in my life and I am not certain how the day will go without your smiling face, your beautiful tenor voice singing “happy birthday” as you try and trick me out of that last bite of strawberry cheesecake that some unassuming waitress brings to the table after you have spilled the beans that it’s my birthday to the entire restaurant.
Had I known that last year was the last year I would have you here with me to celebrate I would have done all I could have to stop time and freeze that moment forever. But we cannot know what tomorrow will bring…
The tomorrow that happened just two days after my last birthday was a day I wish I had not experienced as you passed from this world to another….and yet I know you are finally at peace and living without pain, which is a blessing I am very grateful for.
So when I awake tomorrow, I will do so with the memory of the sound of your voice singing “happy birthday” running though my mind….I will close my eyes to remember your warm embrace and I will know that you are here with me in spirit as I celebrate the day of my birth….
Over the years, I’ve heard mention of parallel worlds…tomorrow I will imagine you celebrating my birthday in a world parallel to mine…and I will toast your memory with a piece of strawberry cheesecake, saving the last bite for you!
