Selling it all and moving on
December 30th, 2009
Welcome Megan Pittsley of www.meganpittsley.com to the “Living the Life of my Dreams” interview series. Thank you for sharing your story with us today.
Tell us about the path you traveled to arrive where you are today: About a year ago I was living in Massachusetts, where I had lived all my life. My career had been full of corporate HR jobs and I had just gone through a terrible break-up which left me pretty depressed. I was bored, disgruntled, and not exactly loving my life. That’s when I decided to sell everything I own that couldn’t fit into my Kia and trek 3,000+ miles across the country to live in California, where I had always dreamed of going. I took the risk, stayed with some friends in California for a bit, and within a month I found an amazing job providing free career advising and programs to the public as the Job Center Manager for the City of Livermore at Livermore Public Library in California. Then I also discovered roller derby which is now a huge passion of mine as well! I’ve built great friendships and found my way to something that is making me a lot happier. Life is pretty good and having no winters is GREAT!
What kept you moving forward on the days things were not going exactly the way you were hoping they would? I keep in mind that the only thing I can control is my attitude and responses to difficult situations, and that I am the only one responsible for my happiness. I believe that if something is meant to be it will be, so I work as hard as I can to achieve my goals, and if something doesn’t work out it doesn’t stop me. I pick back up, smile, and move on.
What piece of advice would you give to someone who has decided they would like to live in a world of their own creation? You have to own your life and take responsibility for everything in it. Everyone hits obstacles in life and everyone’s situation is very different, but it can only be what you make of it. You have all the power in the world to create what you want. Set goals for yourself and don’t give up on them!
What special things do you do for yourself daily to maintain your momentum and energy levels? I drink a lot of sugar-free Redbull!! I also play roller derby a few days a week to let out aggression and keep in shape. I think physical activity and feeling good about your self are keys to valuing yourself, giving you the strength and confidence to after what you want!
If you could spend 3 days on a deserted island with two people of your choosing, who would they be and why? I think it would have to be my mom because we have fun no matter where we are and what we’re doing. The other person would probably be someone very handy who could build us a comfy shelter, catch and prepare delicious meals, etc. It would be a bonus if he was cute!
What is your favorite audio material and what do you enjoy most about this material? I’m a huge fan of punk rock music. It’s loud and fast and it lets you get all of your aggression out by screaming along to it! A lot of the messages are also very positive, talk about being your own person and not being scared to be whoever you want to be. I guess I’m kind of anti-establishment at heart!
Who has inspired you and what is it about them that you found inspirational? Again, my mother. She is my best friend and has always believed in me and supported me in whatever I want to do.
What do you see in your future? I would like to obtain my Life Coach certification so I can help people in all areas of their lives. I love empowering people to achieve happiness, and hope I can continue to make a living off giving back well into the future.
Where is your favorite place in the world to spend time, what is special to you about this location? Anywhere in nature really. I find camping, kayaking, and hiking very relaxing and centering. I feel connected and yet removed all at once. It’s very re-energizing to me.
What is your favorite way to contribute or give back? I do a lot of community service, but I think my chosen path as a Career Advisor helps people every day, especially in this economy. I always joke with clients about using my HR knowledge for good instead of evil!
Please share the top three things you feel people would benefit from doing if they truly desire to create the life of their dreams? 1.) Make a to-do list of short and long term goals and the paths you can take to get there. 2.) Rate your current satisfaction regarding different aspects of your life, such as work, family, relationships, living situation, etc. Identify areas that need improvement to increase your happiness and create plans on how to achieve a higher rating on these areas. Set goals and include them into your to-do list. 3.) Now that you know what you want, go get it and don’t give up! Perseverance and integrity will take you a long way in improving your life and living the life of your dreams!
What products and services do you offer to assist others on their journey? I currently offer Career Advising and resume services at very inexpensive rates ($25 per hour versus the usual $80-150+).

Having a job that is meaningful is a great plus. So glad to hear your story and to know that you are out there living a good life and helping others. You go girl!
I sincerely admire people who are able to take the bull by the horns and move on. When I left my native country Belgium to follow my American husband to the USA, a good friend of mine told me: Michele you are not starting a new chapter in your book, you are starting a new book. I seems that Megan was able to do just that. Well done Megan!
