‘Tis the season, to exercise a bit of tolerance

Tis the Season . . . to Exercise a Bit of Tolerance

Ah, it’s that time again. The season of tidings and joy. The season of generosity and giving. Unfortunately, in recent years I’ve noticed that many people exhibit another spirit at this time of year: the Spirit of Intolerance.

The problems begin because some people believe that observing the traditions of their favorite holiday is a religious and/or social obligation which should be imposed upon everyone. The situation escalates when they encounter those people who, for whatever reason, choose not to participate in the festivities, at least the most public practices. That’s when the ritual observers accuse non-observant ones of waging a “War on Christmas.”

My first birthday without dad…

December 3rd, 2009

Dear Dad,
3-generationsTonight as I prepare to lay down and go to sleep thoughts of you are running through my mind….  Tomorrow, December 4th, will be the first birthday I will experience without you here as a physical presence in my life and I am not certain how the day will go without your smiling face, your beautiful tenor voice singing “happy birthday” as you try and trick me out of that last bite of strawberry cheesecake that some unassuming waitress brings to the table after you have spilled the beans that it’s my birthday to the entire restaurant.

If you are going to celebrate…

November 3rd, 2009

…at least know what you’re celebrating …

This past weekend I watched as the adventure of our first Halloween in our new neighborhood unfolded.  It was a wild sight to behold, starting weeks before the actual holiday houses were decorated, kids were picking out costumes and my husband after being warned by neighbors, went out and bought 10 pounds of candy “just to be safe” he said.
