Before You Write

Writing a book is a lot like getting married.  It is intensely  personal, it calls for a big commitment, and it requires a sustained effort.  And like marriage, it carries no guarantee of success.
Books and marriages often fail for the same reasons.  The most common reason is that the writer doesn’t know enough about the four essential  components of a successful book.  It may surprise you to know that the first and most important of these components is the self.

Spiritual fiction: A New Perspective

February 28th, 2011

I don’t think any book has ever touched me more than that of “Demian” by the great German writer Hermann Hesse. In my late teens, I had never heard of him, until one day I found that very book just lying in the middle of the street. I read it in a day, and it touched and changed my spiritual life in ways that no non-fiction book ever could.

I’ve lost my mind (if you find it, keep it!)

cgf-headshot22I think I’ve lost my mind….however if you find it, don’t worry about sending it back as I’ve opted to no longer “think” about things, I’m just “doing.” The thing I decided to do – and the reason I think I’ve lost my mind – is something called NaNoWriMo. For the writers out there, you know what I am talking about. For those not involved in the writing field, let me explain.

“Ok, here you go, Mrs. Murphy, just sign on the bottom and you’ll be all set.”

She smiled without thinking.  A big grin that must have taken the sales girl by surprise because she asked, “Mrs. Murphy, is everything okay?”

“Oh, yes,” realizing her actions seemed odd, she added, “everything is just perfect.”

So I awoke this morning after a rather trying weekend, grateful to be alive.  I fore-go my morning coffee for a tall glass of water and wandered into my office to sort through my emails.  Fortunately I am not the only one moving slowing on a cold Texas Monday morning as I had only a handful of emails to sort.  Near the top was an email from Desiree, the Book Club Queen, regarding my latest novel, “Tulips in the Sand.”
